2002 Registration Directions

PWD Ground Rules and Competition

The race is open to all Tigers, Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts registered in this Pack (Each scout may enter only one car in the competition. Several cars may be constructed but only one may be registered and raced).

The car must have been built during the current year (the school year in which the Derby is held). Cars that have competed in a previous Derby are not permitted.

6-Lane Rotation

Competition will consist of timed races within rank using a 6-lane rotation.  The Winners will be determined by best average time from all 6 lanes.

Cars will be assigned to a race group at registration based on rank of similar aged scouts.  Adjacent ranks may be combined.  Ie: Webelos I and Webelos II may be combined as well as Tigers and Wolfs and Wolfs and Bears in a race group to ensure that as many cars are racing in each race as possible (they still compete in their current Rank).

Each group will consist of a maximum of 6 cars and will race one Round.  Each Car will race in each lance once as described by the Derby Master timing software to complete the Round.

The cars will rotate lanes in a decrementing order 6-5,5-4,4-3,3-2,2-1,1-6.

Registration Official

Cars are registered in order by rank and entered into a group of 6 similar ranked scouts.

All scouts from the previous rank must be registered before registration of an older rank may begin (ie Wolf before Bears).

Groups are designated A,B,C,D,E,….Z

Each car is given a designation <letter>-<number> where the number is from 1-6 and corresponds to the entry in the database.  This designation will be affixed to the car.

The Registration Official will save each group to a floppy and hand it to the timer official

Starting official

Ensures that the cars are loaded into the correct lane and track timer is ready to start the next race.

The starting official will also record any cars that did not race or did not finish the race, due to car damage, jumped the track, stopped on lane etc.. The car number and lane will be reported to the race official and timer official.

Timer Official

Prior to each racing round, the timer official will load in the groups race project file into Derby Master, ensure the correct number of races has been computed and start the round.

During competition, the timer official will ensure that the current race has completed and will report any anomalies to the race official (dummy car finishes with a timer not equal to 20sec etc).  The timer official will rerun a race when directed by the race official in accordance with the rules above.  At completion of the round the timer official will save and provide the results to the race official.

Race Official aka Judge

Registration phase:

The race official will ensure that the registration is completed correctly and deliver the groups project file to the timer official for loading into Derby Master.

Racing phase:

The race official will review and tally all results from each rank group and announce first, second and third winner for each rank.

The race official may deem a race result questionable and request that an individual race in a round be re-run.

Award Official

Award official assists with awarding participation awards to EVERY Scout participating.  They Award first second and third place winners and the Do Your Best Awards.

Do Your Best Awards are presented to every Scout that improves his average time from the previous year. These are to be presented as soon as possible – preferably at the same time the first-third place winners are announced.

Track Area and Impound

Only officials and scouts participating in the current race may enter the track area. This rule will be strictly enforced.

All cars will be impounded after the race until the race official deems the race results are final.

Race Mishaps

If a car jumps the track

The race will be run again. If the same car jumps the track a second time, that car will score the maximum time (20sec) for that race and the Round will continue to the next race

If a car leaves its lane and interferes with another car

The race will be run again. If the same car leaves its lane a second time and interferes with another car, the race will be run again without the interfering car. The interfering car will score the maximum time (20sec) for that race automatically by the timer software.  The judges may also rule that the car is not fit to continue and may be disqualified.

If a car becomes damaged and cannot be repaired at the starting gate area (reattach a wheel etc)

The round may be suspended and the current race statistics saved.  All active cars in this round will be impounded and next race group will race its round.  The damaged car may then be repaired and re-inspected.  After completion of this round the suspended round will resume in accordance with the rules above.

If the car cannot be repaired and re-inspected by the completion of the next race groups round

Then the suspended round will continue without the repaired car.  The car may be allowed to re-enter the suspended round’s current race after repairs and re-inspection if the round has not completed but will forfeit any races that had completed.   Any car that is being re-inspected after a repair will be given priority at the inspection table.
