The Pack

Cub Scout Pack 71 is a group made up of several Dens. Dens are organized by age group. The Pack includes not only the boys in those dens, but also their families and their leaders. Cub Scouting is a family oriented activity and we urge all parents to become involved at some level.

This involvement might be:
  1. Taking charge of an event, organizing it, making necessary arrangements and ensuring that it is carried out.
  2. Driving on outings and field trips.
  3. Becoming a Den Leader or Assistant Den Leader.

Pack 71 meets once a month in the cafeteria at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, usually on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, with Cub Scouts, leaders, parents and other family members attending. The Pack Meeting is the climax of the month's Den meetings and activities. It gives the Dens something to look forward to and work toward. Dens will work on cheers, yells and skits to be presented. The Pack Meeting will also host the awards and recognition ceremonies. This is a chance to recognize the Scout's achievements, their parents, and their leaders.

Pack 71 holds several all-Pack events throughout the Scout year, including:

  1. The Pinewood Derby
  2. Cake Auction.
  3. And a variety of other field trips and events.

The Pack is led by our Cubmaster. He is an adult volunteer who serves as master of ceremonies at all Pack Meetings and leads Pack activities of all kinds. Pack leadership positions may be held by women or men.

The Pack Committee is a group of adult volunteers who plan the Pack program and individual activities as well as managing such things as record keeping, finance, leadership recruitment, leader training, and registration.

The Committee meets monthly and meetings are open to any interested parents.

The Den

A Cub Scout Pack is divided into small groups of about six to eight boys called dens, who try to meet weekly under the direction of adult Den Leaders and Assistant Leaders.

The den allows boys to get to know each other better and engage in activities that would be difficult in a larger group. The den also provides leadership opportunities for the boys as they help to teach each other. In Pack 71, den meeting activities are planned around a monthly theme and include games, handicrafts, hikes, field trips and campouts, practicing skits and stunts, yells, cheers, and activity badge requirements in preparation for the next Pack meeting and taking part in simple ceremonies and songs. Work on advancement requirements is included, and the Scouts are encouraged to work on advancement requirements at home with their parents. The Den Leaders may ask for special help occasionally from parents (helping with a meeting, sharing a special skill, or just providing a snack for the boys).

All boys in grades 1-5 are welcome to join. The first rank that EVERY boy MUST earn when entering the Cub Scouting Program after the Tiger Cub program is the Bobcat rank. Tiger Cubs earn the Tiger Cub rank THEN the Bobcat rank. Boys joining after the Tiger Cub year start with the Bobcat.
